Music.
It's the universal language.
You can understand mood, theme, and emotion without understand a single lyric.
I remember visiting Russia and sitting on a bus listening to a song in Russian.
The interpretor sitting by me asked, “Why do you look so thoughtful?”
I realized I was reflecting the music’s mood and answered, “This song sounds so sad.”
She explained the lyrics and confirmed that it was indeed a sad song.
Sound in general is universal:
A loud firework.
A siren from a police car, firetruck, or ambulance.
A church bell ringing.
Thunder.
Some of my favorite sounds are:
The sound of a bamboo forest when the shoots clink together.
A toddler's first tooth crunch on a piece of cereal.
My teenage daughters’ singing or laughing together.
And most recently…
the sound of a rushing river while I write.
So what is music to your ears?
Take a minute to think of your top three sounds and share them.
